Heritage BIM

Heritage BIM, known also as Historic BIM or heritage digitization is a specialty of BIMfaktoria. As part of our services, we conduct non-invasive and precise scanning measurements that allow us to reach where classical methods fail. They are the basis for creating detail-rich Heritage BIM models with elaborate classification and historical data, which are successfully used by architects, conservators, contractors, archaeologists and more.

Nowadays, traditional measurement methods are becoming a thing of the past, replaced by technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry, which are also applicable to the inventory of historic buildings. 3D laser scanning creates a “digital twin” of the object, which greatly helps in the processes aimed at preserving the object, but also provides an opportunity to create an archive – a knowledge base (digitalization of the monument) for future generations. That is why our team is in constant cooperation with the community of architects, historians or conservationists.

HBIM Models

Laser scanning technology makes it possible to obtain very high quality measurement data in the form of a so-called point cloud in a completely non-invasive way for the historic fabric.

The result is an HBIM (historical BIM) model that represents not only the appearance of the monument, but also allows exploration and comprehensive analysis of proposed conservation interventions in various scenarios. This is possible, thanks to the use of extremely precise laser scanning. Then the creation of such a historical model becomes much simpler than when using analog methods and involves little risk of errors.

The ability to make a model or to follow the correct procedures, which are important especially in the case of HBIM objects, are integral parts of developing conservation documentation. Combining modern technology with a monument is possible and even advisable. Despite the large amount of work, the software and measurement methods used, as well as HBIM technology, guarantee a very good quality of the final version of the model for the management of the monument.

What distinguishes the modeling of historic buildings with us is high precision, paying attention to every detail, and what is often forgotten when working with new buildings – the lack of repetition, treating each element individually, and not as a repetitive stamp. It is thanks to this approach that we can talk about a digital representation, and not just a symbol of the real object. Below is an example of an object in the BIMx viewer. This is the Romantic Castle, which is part of the Palace Complex in Łańcut.

Digitization of historical monuments

HBIM models can serve as a source database in the potential transformation of the historic substance, as well as the active protection of this resource. They can be explored and popularized in various environments using cultural heritage resources. The integration of semantic information with parameterized 3D geometry accelerates and facilitates the understanding of both the studied object, as well as the planning and management of project work. HBIM’s integrated digital environment enables flexible modification and use of related resources, supporting the preservation of the monument for popularization, research, design and documentation purposes.
